The Membership Committee was created in 1985 to review all applications for membership in the society, to undertake recruiting efforts to ensure a diverse membership, and to communicate with the Executive Board on behalf of the members. The Membership Committee Chair is appointed by the Executive Board and serves for 3 years. The Membership Committee was formally acknowledged and the Membership Committee Chair became a voting member of the Executive Board in 1990 when the ASB members approved a change in the ASB Bylaws. Membership Committee members are selected by the Chair and are approved by the Executive Board. Each member of the committee represents one of the five categories of membership in ASB.
The membership categories established in the original ASB Bylaws were Charter Member (attended the first ASB meeting in 1977), Member, and Student Member. In 1989, three more membership categories were approved by the Executive Board: Honorary Member, Emeritus Member, and Sustaining Member (commercial sponsors). In 1997, the Sustaining Member category was subdivided into Sustaining, Supporting, Contributing and Corporate Members, depending on the level of financial support.
In 2009, the ASB members passed a bylaw to create the position of Secretary, which combines some of the Secretary/Treasurer duties with the Membership Committee Chair duties.
