Joan Bechtold

Joan Bechtold is a Professor in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and in the Graduate Programs in Biomedical Engineering and in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Bechtold has been the Director of the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis since 1984, where she works very closely with an active group of Orthopaedic Surgeons. She has been continuously funded by NIH to study the failure mechanisms of revision joint replacement since 1996, with her long time collaborator and friend Dr. Kjeld Soballe from the Aarhus University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark. Joanie holds a courtesy position in Aarhus as Professor of experimental implant surgery since 2005. Her work with Dr. Soballe was recognized with a Harris Hip Award from the ORS in 2005.

Dr. Bechtold has been a member of the NIH/NIAMS Orthopaedic Study Section; Skeletal Biology and Skeletal Regeneration (ad hoc (2002-2004) permanent membership (2004-2008)). She presently serves as a member of the World Council of Biomechanics (2002-2014). Joan served as the Program Chair for the NACOB meeting in 1992, served on the Nominating Committee in 1993-94, received a Travel Award from ASB in 1995, served as the ASB Secretary / Treasurer from 1995-1998, and served as President in 2002-2003. She has also served ASB as a representative to the Journal of Biomechanics and to the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Dr. Bechtold has also served in a leadership role in the Orthopaedic Research Society, culminating in her service as President in 2013-2014.
